Presentation Overview: The latest advancements in concussion management include assessments (and therapy) involving the vestibular and ocular motor systems. Dysfunction in these areas is often present but overlooked in concussed athletes leading to longer recovery times. This lecture will provide professionals with information on the vestibular ocular motor screen tool to aid in the management of the concussed athlete.to our athletes, patients, colleagues, and friends and doing so starts with having these types of conversations.
Objectives:
At the end of the session participants should be able to:
1. Describe the current state of the art in concussion management
2. Describe the vestibular ocular motor screen (VOMS) assessment.
3. Describe how to incorporate the VOMS into concussion management.
Bio: Ryan Tierney is an associate professor and the director of the Sport Concussion Lab at Temple University. He received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Delaware and has been a certified athletic trainer since 1996. Dr. Tierney received his doctorate in Kinesiology from Temple University in 2004. His current research focuses on concussion assessments and examining the mechanisms underlying individual responses to head impacts. He has multiple publications and presentations related to vestibular and ocular motor performance associated with concussion management.
