Continuing a strong legacy of health care

Ours is the first hospital in the United States to be named after a nurse. Born in 1876, Clara Maass dedicated the most of her life to helping others. Her determination to save lives led her to participate in a bold yellow fever experiment in which she willingly subjecting herself to bites from infected mosquitoes. The experiment led to her death, but the study was instrumental in the eventual creation of a yellow fever vaccine.

We are proud to carry on Clara Maass’ legacy by pushing healthcare to new heights through innovative treatments and supreme dedication to our patients. Our hospital was named in her honor so that we will never forget the incredible resolve a medical professional can have for helping people and saving lives.

    Carol

Carol Welsch of West Orange, NJ, had such a positive experience when she had her first knee replacement surgery at Clara Maass that she came back less than three years later to have the other knee replaced. In Carol's words... “A hidden gem: that is how I feel about Clara Maass Medical Center. My experience could not have been more positive. From my first encounter with my surgeon and his staff, to the hospital team that cared for me post-op, to the rehabilitation staff who worked tirelessly with me, it was an A+ experience in all areas. Yes, it was difficult on some days but I was determined ...

    Dawn

All six of us were born at Clara so, for me and my siblings, giving back is very important. Our mother has been a nurse there for over 25 years and this hospital has also played a major role in our father's cancer care. Clara Maass Medical Center is a vital part of our community and a trusted part of our family. For the past three years, we have given back to Clara Maass Medical Center in a very unique way. Each holiday season, we collect and donate items that fill the Oncology Holiday Gift Cart. This cart allows patients undergoing cancer treatment to “shop” for their loved ones by selecting ...

    Antoinette

Antoinette, a Belleville resident and mother of three, had a long history of medical issues—obesity, out-of-control diabetes, high blood pressure, nerve damage, sleep apnea—and she needed a change. Diets of every kind, as well as diet pills, had not done the trick. If she lost weight, it refused to stay off. "I'd lose two pounds and gain back 10,” said Antoinette. Walking up the stairs left her breathless and walking or standing in general made her feet and legs ache. She also had a hard time keeping up with her energetic daughters. Finally, her doctor recommended attending a bariatric surgery ...

    Karen

Like most, Karen Lynen never expected to be in a position to need bariatric surgery. The 40-year-old, busy mom of three was going to the gym and working out on her own but her customer service job kept her sitting down in front of a computer most days. When her eldest daughter, in her early 20s, began considering bariatric surgery, Karen accompanied her to appointments with surgeon Naveen Ballem, MD, Director of the New Jersey Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC). It was there that Karen learned she, too, was a good candidate for bariatric surgery. “I was 214 ...

    Joseph

Joseph Zjawin, 84, of Newark, NJ, exclaimed he felt like “a new man” now more confident in managing his Heart Failure following the placement of the CardioMEMS heart failure (HF) System at Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) in Belleville, an RWJBarnabas Health facility. In late May 2015, Joseph was the first patient to receive the device at an Essex County facility, making CMMC the first hospital in the county to implant the only FDA-approved Heart Failure monitoring device proven to significantly reduce hospital admissions. This new system allows patients to transmit daily sensor readings from ...

    Anne

Getting Stronger with Cardiac Rehab After her heart attack last summer, 82-year-old Anne didn’t know what her future would hold. But within her first five months of cardiac rehabilitation at Clara Maass Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, the Belleville resident is back to her usual activities – driving, going out with friends, doing housework – and even visiting extended family in Nebraska. “They’re very good,” says Anne, describing the Clara Maass program. “At first I was tired. Now I feel much stronger. I love going there.” Initially, Anne needed a walker after her heart attack. ...

Patient Stories

  • Before my surgeries, it was increasingly more difficult to walk, to exercise, to ski because of the pain. Consequently, the knee replacement surgery was like a miracle to me.

  • Clara Maass Medical Center has been a part of my family for as long as I can remember.

  • “It was the best decision I ever made in my life.”

  • “It made a big difference in my life. If I can help support people in their decision, why not? I had plenty of support.”

  • In late May 2015, Joseph was the first patient to receive the device at an Essex County facility, making CMMC the first hospital in the county to implant the only FDA-approved Heart Failure monitoring device proven to significantly reduce hospital admissions.

  • “My head is clearer, I was light-headed at the beginning; now that’s gone.”
