Our Specialized Care

When a child suffers a brain injury, the path to recovery is often a challenging on. The inpatient brain injury program at CSH provides young patients a broad range of complex medical care and rehabilitation therapy to address their impairments. We treat individuals who have a brain injury through physical trauma or medical conditions that affects brain function. The inpatient brain injury program may provide each child with tools and technologies to help with seating and positioning, mobility, communication, self-care, feeding and swallowing.

Additionally, CSH has a R.E.S.T. protocol for children with disorders of consciousness who are unable to actively participate in traditional therapy. The R.E.S.T. protocol stands for Restful Recovery, Emphasis on Education, Sensory Simulation, and Therapeutic Interventions.

Our Individualized Approach

Our individualized approach includes:

  • Individualized care to support responses to sensory stimulation and progression of motor skills
  • Focus on cognitive skills and improvement of executive function for transition to the home and school environment
  • Neuropsychology screener available for participation and reintegration to home, school and community.

A typical evaluation includes an assessment in the following areas:

  • Cognition, communication and motor skills
  • Attention/working memory
  • Executive functions (i.e., planning, initiation, organization, mental flexibility)
  • Sensory and visual spatial processing
  • Neuropsychology screening
