Advanced certification recognizes Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s continued commitment to providing high-quality care for patients with complex stroke

New Brunswick, NJ (October 29, 2026) – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, today announced it has received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification in Comprehensive Stroke Center for the seventh consecutive time.
The Gold Seal of Approval® reflects RWJUH's adherence to rigorous national standards for quality and patient safety in stroke care and underscores the hospital's longstanding commitment to serving patients with complex stroke needs.

“Achieving this recertification for the seventh consecutive time reflects the consistency and dedication required to provide advanced stroke care at the highest level,” said Igor Rybinnik, MD, Interim Chair of the Department of Neurology and Professor of Neurology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) and Chief of the Neurology Service at RWJUH. “When it comes to stroke, every minute matters. Maintaining these standards helps ensure our teams are prepared to evaluate and treat patients from the moment they arrive at our hospital.”
The Comprehensive Stroke Center at RWJUH provides patients with rapid diagnosis and treatment, specialized inpatient care and access to clinical research. Together, these capabilities support multidisciplinary, highly specialized care for a range of stroke needs, including complex cases.
“Comprehensive stroke care requires close coordination across many specialties, from a patient's initial evaluation through treatment, inpatient care and recovery,” said Deviyani Mehta, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology at RWJMS and Medical Director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at RWJUH. “This recertification recognizes the expertise and collaboration of our entire stroke team and our shared commitment to providing patients with timely, evidence-based care throughout every stage of their treatment.”
The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients, and are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus. As part of the certification process, surveyors conduct onsite observations and interviews to evaluate an organization’s performance and compliance with established standards.
RWJUH first earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Comprehensive Stroke Center in 2013 and has successfully maintained the designation at every subsequent certification cycle, earning seven consecutive certifications. The latest certification marks more than a decade of maintaining the standards required of Comprehensive Stroke Centers and delivering coordinated stroke care to patients throughout New Jersey.
