David Mebane accepts his 2025 NJBIZ ICON award, recognizing his leadership and decades of service to New Jersey’s healthcare and business communities.
Mebane Recognized for Collaborative Leadership; Retires This Year
West Orange, New Jersey, June 17, 2025 – David Mebane, Esq., Executive Vice President and General Counsel, RWJBarnabas Health, was honored as a recipient of the 2025 NJBIZ ICON award. This esteemed award given by a leader in statewide business news recognizes New Jersey leaders for their notable success, demonstration of strong leadership both within and outside their chosen field, and long-standing contributions to their industry and community. The honorees were celebrated at a ceremony held in Somerset, NJ on May 20.
Mr. Mebane is responsible for legal affairs, privacy and insurance throughout RWJBarnabas Health, and serves as president of its captive insurance company. With more than 30 years of service to RWJBarnabas Health, Mr. Mebane played a significant role in its very creation, and his long history with the health system has provided him with a unique perspective on its strategic needs.
In 1996, Mr. Mebane led the initial consolidation of the eight hospitals that became Barnabas Health, the largest health system in New Jersey at the time. He was also part of the leadership team that took Barnabas Health through its 2016 merger with the RWJ Health System, which created RWJBarnabas Health. As General Counsel, Mr. Mebane established the new entity’s legal department and has since built a world-class legal team.
Mr. Mebane will be retiring from RWJBarnabas Health at the end of this year. He has had an enduring impact on RWJBarnabas Health, and his process-driven and collaborative leadership style is respected and admired.
