May 24, 2023 Two RWJBarnabas Health Facilities Nationally Recognized as Best Maternity Care Hospitals by Newsweek

Newsweek - America's Best Maternity Hospitals 2023 West Orange, NJ, May 24, 2023 – Two RWJBarnabas Health facilities, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) in Livingston and Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) in Long Branch, were named to Newsweek’s 2023 list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc. The awards list can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Three data sources were used for the evaluation:

  • A nationwide online survey of hospital administrators and health care professionals with knowledge about maternity processes, including obstetricians and gynecologists, midwives, maternal fetal medicine physicians and neonatologists.
  • Medical key performance indicators on hospitals, with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care.
  • Results from patient satisfaction surveys.

Newsweek and Statista invited over 10,000 medical professionals to participate in the survey. Only 384 hospitals were recognized on the Best Maternity Hospitals 2023 list.

“Receiving this prestigious designation for Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center is a testament to the teams’ dedication to patient-centered care,” said Suzanne Spernal, DNP, APN-BC, Senior Vice President, Women’s Services at RWJBarnabas Health. “RWJBarnabas Health is committed to providing safe, respectful and consistently excellent care for every mother who entrusts us with the delivery of their babies.”

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center’s Obstetrical Service is one of the largest in Northern New Jersey, delivering more than 6,400 babies annually, and is a Level III Regional Perinatal Center. As a high-risk obstetrical referral service, the department offers all the services necessary for the care of both mother and baby, and CBMC’s comprehensive Pediatrics Department includes a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for babies requiring intensive care due to prematurity or other complications requiring medical or surgical procedures.

Monmouth Medical Center is one of New Jersey’s busiest birthing hospitals, with more than 6,500 babies delivered annually, more than all other regional hospitals combined. MMC has been a Level III Regional Perinatal Center since the designation was initiated more than 40 years ago and has built one of the safest obstetrical and gynecological services in the nation.

In 2022, both CBMC and MMC were among the first three hospitals in the state chosen to launch TeamBirth, an evidence-based, national model for enhanced provider and patient communication during the birthing process. This initiative is led by the New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in partnership with Ariadne Labs. Also in 2022, the RWJBarnabas Health Maternal Health programs received 26 awards from Healthgrades, the highest number of awards in the state for excellence in comprehensive women’s care. Additionally, four RWJBarnabas Health facilities were named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-23 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that aims to help consumers make informed decisions about their health, also named three RWJBarnabas Health facilities to its 2022 list of the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care, among just 259 hospitals nationally to receive the award.
