Summer is synonymous with vacations, sun, fun, and of course, ice cream! Jamie Miller, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, shares, “ice cream can certainly be enjoyed as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Because traditional ice cream tends to be high in added sugar, saturated fat and calories, it is important to practice portion control and enjoy it in moderation. There are also many other frozen treats that can be enjoyed in place of ice cream to help beat the heat without compromising your health goals.”

If you are looking for some healthier options that are sure to satisfy that summertime craving, we have the scoop for you!

Consider giving one of these ideas a try:

  1. Frozen Fruit – Blend up your favorite fruits for a perfect puree! Frozen fruit bars are also a delight. You can make on your own at home using Popsicle molds or purchase them at the grocery store. The varieties that are made with real fruit and vegetable juices, and do not contain any added sugars are best.
  2. Non-Dairy Alternatives – Popular ice cream brands also feature some delicious non-dairy ice cream options that are made with coconut, almond, oat, soy, and other plant-based milks. Usually, they contain less saturated fat and slightly less calories (with the exception of coconut milk ice cream). For those who are lactose intolerant, this is a great way to enjoy ice cream without GI issues.
  3. Frozen Yogurt – A great alternative, typically with fewer calories than regular ice cream. Vanilla and fruit flavors tend to be lower in calories than more gourmet flavors like cookie dough, chocolate peanut butter, and salted caramel.
  4. Gelato – Believe it or not, gelato is lower in fat and calories than traditional ice cream. Gelato is made with less cream, and usually has no egg yolks. It may contain more added sugar, though, so make sure you check the label!
  5. Shaved Ice – A refreshing and hydrating option that is fat-free and lower in calories. Pick your favorite flavor and enjoy!
