Blood donors needed to help patients at RWJ University Hospital Somerset

NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ— Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset Blood Services is partnering with municipal leaders on Tuesday, October 20th for the North Plainfield Community Blood Drive. The blood drive will take place from noon to 5:30 p.m. at the Vermeule Center on Greenbrook Road.

Blood donors are urgently needed to help ensure a well-stocked supply in advance of the upcoming winter months.

“In addition to typical cold-weather related shortages, we anticipate continued pandemic-related challenges into the new year,” said Silvia Arango, transfusion services supervisor for RWJUH Somerset.

"The people of North Plainfield are always reaching out to their neighbors; this is a natural extension of that and I'm proud that we can come together and help our local hospital in these trying times," said North Plainfield Mayor Michael Giordano, Jr.

“We are grateful to Mayor Giordano and council for welcoming us to North Plainfield and rallying the citizens to help match the need,” said Arango.

RWJUS Somerset’s Blood Services is conducting blood drives with donor safety as a top priority. All donors are required to make an appointment to allow for maximum social distancing and enhanced disinfection protocols. Registrations can be made online at RWJUHDonorClub.org or by calling 908-685-2926. Masks are required and all attendees will undergo a temperature check and brief COVID-19 pre-screening questionnaire upon arrival.

As a token of thanks, all donors will receive a free T-shirt.

Donors must be 18 years old (16 and 17 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 lbs. (120 lbs. if under 18) and bring photo ID. Donors are encouraged to eat and hydrate well before arrival. For medical or travel eligibility questions, please call 908-685-2926.
