Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) at Jersey City Medical Center

At Jersey City Medical Center, we believe exceptional surgical care begins well before you arrive in the operating room. That’s why we offer a dedicated Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) process to help prepare you for surgery both physically and emotionally. PAT is an important part of your care journey — one that supports a smoother experience, minimizes surprises, and promotes a safe recovery.

Whether your procedure is scheduled weeks in advance or more urgently, PAT helps your surgical team to evaluate your medical history prior to a surgical or medical procedure. In some cases, patients may complete this process through their provider, while others may have it coordinated directly by our surgical team. Regardless of the path, our goal is to ensure that your care team has a full picture of your health before the day of surgery.

During the PAT process, we review important medical information, identify any areas of concern, and help coordinate necessary clearances. This is also a time when patients receive education about what to expect before, during, and after surgery. You’ll learn about any special instructions — such as medication adjustments or fasting — and have an opportunity to ask questions and feel fully informed.

By planning ahead, we’re better able to personalize your care and reduce the risk of avoidable complications. It also gives you space to feel more confident and in control as you approach surgery. At Jersey City Medical Center, PAT is more than just preparation—it’s a reflection of how we care: thoughtfully, thoroughly, and with your well being at the center of every decision.

We’re proud to offer Pre-Admission Testing as part of our commitment to delivering safe, seamless, and patient focused care from start to finish.

What to Expect Before Your Surgery

  • Patients may need testing before surgery including a physical exam, blood work, EKG, stress test, or chest x-ray.
  • Testing requirements are determined by the surgeon and anesthesia team.
  • Not every patient is required to complete pre-admission testing, but laboratory tests may still be necessary.
  • Some medications may need to be held before surgery which your surgeon can review and discuss with you.

Testing Duration

Pre-admission testing visits typically last 30–45 minutes depending on the surgical specialty.

Already Completed Testing

If tests were completed at another facility, patients should contact the Pre-Admission Testing team to confirm what is still required.

Results can be faxed to: 201-915-2539.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications and slows healing. Patients are strongly encouraged to quit smoking prior to surgery.
