Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The neonatal intensive care unit at Jersey City Medical Center is the region’s only state-designated perinatal center, accepting and providing treatment to infants suffering from extreme prematurity, severe respiratory distress and feeding issues during the first 28 days of life.

All patients in the NICU are provided around-the-clock monitoring with state of the art bedside and central monitoring. Patients of the JCMC NICU receive care from specially training and board certified neonatologists as well as nurses certified in the specialty JCMC is a Magnet-designated center for nursing excellence.

Technological advances in the NICU using evidence based practice and evidence based research continue to improve patient outcomes for our NICU patients, some as small as 500 grams (about one pound) by providing a fighting chance not only to survive but to lead normal and healthy lives.

Dr. Ameth AguirreDr. Ameth Aguirre, Director of neonatology, and his team of neonatologist work collaboratively with the nursing staff and other specialties to ensure all our fragile patients receive safe and quality care including beneficial use of oxygen and optimal nutrition. Our NICU staff along with certified breastfeeding counselors provides 24-hour breastfeeding support and education. A NICU breastfeeding support group meets every second and fourth Thursday of the month encouraging and educating families of the importance of breast milk and the vital role human milk plays in providing optimal growth and nutrition for their baby.

Our NICU patients also receive assessments and evaluation services by speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy for feeding and developments support along the continuum of care.

The physicians and staff of the Jersey Medical Center NICU work diligently to provide patient-centered family focused care by providing NICU parents 24-hour visitation while also allowing sibling visitation on the weekends and holidays.
