Athletic Training Services

RWJBarnabas Health provides community-based outreach athletic training services to local secondary schools, colleges, professional athletes, performance artists, organizations, and workplaces. Athletic Trainers are board certified healthcare professionals who specialize in preventing, evaluating, managing, and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete healthcare team, athletic trainers works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other professionals such as school nurses, physical therapists, athletics administrators, business administrators, coaches and parents.

Currently RWJBarnabas Health supports athletic training partnerships all across the state, ranging from full time support to per diem supplemental/substitute support. With regional athletic trainers connected to our RWJUH Somerset, RWJUH Hamilton, Cooperman Barnabas, Rutgers, Monmouth Medical, and Jersey City Medical hubs, you have extensive networks of specialty support available to help active persons in our communities reduce their risk of injury and manage it when it does occurs. We also provide educational Workshops for coaches, school staff, athletes, parents, and workplace employees, and community members on topics within Sports Medicine, Injury Reduction, and Performance Enhancement. Looking to update your protocols? We offer sports medicine policy, procedure, and staffing consulting for district athletic trainers and athletic directors.

We take pride in delivering an unparalleled athletic training experience to those with whom we work, collaborating in a win/win relationship wherein we are committed to providing the highest level of appropriate medical care and injury risk abatement services. We obtain our positive outcomes by staying on the cutting edge of injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation approaches. We pursue mastery of our profession, we act with purpose at all times, and we are committed to making a positive impact on all of those we serve and represent.

The following focal points are the four core components which drive the athletic training services we provide “beyond the injury care”.

  • Teamwork and relationship building – a focus on working collaboratively in effective cross-functional supportive relationships with the school/organization’s administrators, healthcare team (medical director/school physician, athletic trainers, nurses), physical education teachers, and any other valued school/organization team member.
  • Education of others - a focus on being a trusted resource for health, safety, injury reduction, and injury education to the student athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents of the school district or organization.
  • Quality Control – a focus on pursuing mastery to ensure that our operations, protocols, and approaches are producing the positive results that our clients deserve
  • Organization - a focus on staying highly organized in order to provide a positive healthcare team environment

Important info regarding Athletic Training services

Who can take advantage of the athletic trainer on-site?

Schools and Community Athletics Organizations: Only students who participate on an interscholastic athletic team may take advantage of the full scope of AT services within the school. (Other members of the school community may consult with your athletic trainer if you have any questions, and they will guide you with the appropriate next steps.)

  • When a student athlete is injured, the RWJBH athletic trainer will assess the athlete’s injury and communicate the participation status and recommended plan of care to the person (and to the parent/guardian when a minor). In the event that it is recommended you/your child seek further medical evaluation (i.e. imaging, specialist consult, urgent care, or family physician/pediatrician), the athletic trainer will provide an "athletic training referral" form to be given to the healthcare provider the athlete sees.
  • Student Athletes: If you see a physician or outside healthcare provider for a condition which affects participation in school sports must provide a note from their healthcare provider indicating:
    • Injury/condition
    • Participation status
    • Any additional recommendations, limitations, and/or specific instructions

Workplaces and Performance Artists: Anyone who is an official employee of that organization and incurs an injury directly related to their job duties, anyone who wishes to reduce their risk of injury, and anyone who is looking to be more ergonomically efficient with their duties.

If you see an outside healthcare professional prior to seeing the athletic trainer, it is important to inform the onsite athletic trainer to ensure consistency of injury care between your athletic trainer and outside healthcare providers.
