Opioid Overdose Recovery Program

The RWJBarnabas Health Opioid Overdose Recovery Program (OORP) provides recovery support services for individuals who were reversed from opioid overdose and are treated at select hospital emergency departments. When a Narcan reversed patient is admitted to one of our participating hospitals, a Recovery Specialist is deployed within one hour to their bedside to issue a bedside intervention. The OORP’s goal is to link individuals reversed from an opioid overdose to detox, substance use disorder treatment and continued recovery support services. The OORP links first responders with participating emergency departments to ensure that people suffering from substance use disorder have access to proper treatment with the goal of recovery.

Program Design

Recovery Specialists

Recovery Specialists are trained and certified professionals with a firsthand understanding about addiction and recovery. ALL RWJBarnabas Health Recovery Specialists are themselves in recovery and have battled addiction for a minimum of four years. This unique aspect is what helps them to connect with those suffering from substance use disorder on a personal, peer-to-peer level.

Recovery Specialists are deployed within one hour upon notification of a Narcan reversed patient. They work with reversed patients for a minimum of eight weeks with the goal of entry into an appropriate treatment program.

Patient Navigators

Once the patient agrees to enter into a treatment program, a Patient Navigator links them with appropriate treatment and recovery services. They also provide assistance with daily living support in the areas of housing, finances, healthcare, legal, employment and family needs. Patient Navigators collaborate with treatment and detox facilities to ensure the best coordination of care for the individual in need.

Outcomes

▪ Over 80% of those reversed accept bedside intervention via the OORP
▪ Since the OORP launch in 2016, the program has implemented over 2,000 interventions throughout the RWJBarnabas Health’s service area
▪ Over 75% of patients accept bedside intervention, and of those, 45% accept detox, substance use disorder treatment and/or recovery
