Clara Maass Medical Center is a 469-bed community medical center located in Belleville, NJ. Clara Maass’ mission is to provide “exceptional” Services and Quality to its Community through its Passion for Excellence and Perfection.

Clara Maass has a variety of services and centers including: the Women’s Health Center, Nuclear Medicine, The Cancer Center at Clara Maass, Diagnostic Cardiac Services including Cardiac Catheterization, Emergency Angioplasty and Rehabilitation, The Pain Management Center, The Joint and Spine Institute, a Vascular Center, Same Day Surgery, The Wound Care Center at Clara Maass, The Center for Sleep Disorders, The Bariatric Surgery Center, Rehabilitation Services, Comprehensive Ophthalmology Services, Maternity Services and Parent Education, Pediatrics, a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, Radiology Services and community outreach programs. The Emergency Department has more than 80,000 visits annually.

The pharmacy department employs more than 65 people and cares for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Outpatient care services include the cancer center and emergency department. In addition to the pharmacists located in the main pharmacy, there is a decentralized pharmacist located in the medical intensive care unit and a third floor telemetry unit. These decentralized pharmacists participate in daily rounds, assist in drug information, perform patient counseling and order verification. Pharmacy specialists provide additional services in the areas of Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine/Infectious Disease and Behavioral Health. All pharmacy specialists are board certified in their respective care areas.

The pharmacy department performs a variety of clinical services including: IV to PO, automatic renal adjustment and therapeutic substitutions. Additionally, the pharmacy department has three pharmacy managed programs for heparin, warfarin and vancomycin. Pharmacy is involved in multi-disciplinary rounds throughout the hospital. Pharmacy works collaboratively with the transitions of care teams for congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia to help reduce readmissions in these populations. All full-time pharmacists are BLS certified; additionally pharmacy specialists are ACLS certified and assist in medical emergencies. Those specialists that work in the emergency department are also PALS certified.

The pharmacy department has had a PGY-1 residency program since 2007 and currently has 2 PGY-1 resident positions. Additionally, the pharmacy department precepts students from a variety of schools including: Rutgers University, University of Sciences in Philadelphia and Farleigh Dickinson University.
