Family Medicine Residency Program
Application Criteria
- Applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). No faxes or emails will be accepted, and no applications will be pre-screened.
- Applicants must be US citizens or be currently authorized to work in the United States. RWJUH Somerset will not consider applicants in need of a visa.
- Medical schools must be on the Medical Schools Recognized by the Medical Board of California list.
- Applicants must have graduated within two years of July 2026
- International Medical Graduates must meet all requirements for certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)

Passing scores on USMLE Steps/COMLEX Levels, preferably on the first attempt.
- Passing scores on USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 are required
- Passing scores on USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 are preferred. Applicants may be considered if these scores are pending
- Applicants without passing scores on USMLE 2/COMLEX Level 2 will not be considered for the final Rank List
- Direct, supervised clinical experience in the United States within the last twelve months
- Three Letters of Recommendation from US physicians with whom the applicant has had direct clinical experience, including two Letters from Family Physicians

Interview Scheduling
- All interviews for the 2025-2026 recruitment season will be conducted virtually
- Invitations to interview will be sent out on a rolling basis through Thalamus beginning in October 2025
- Interviews will be scheduled through Thalamus
- Interviews will be conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings beginning in mid- October 2025. Interviews will conclude in late January 2026
- Dates for “Meet and Greet” sessions with residents will be announced at a later date. Both virtual and in-person Meet and Greet sessions will be scheduled
