Understanding Your Refund

At RWJBarnabas Health, we are committed to making billing and refund processes as clear, secure, and convenient as possible for our patients. RWJBarnabas Health now offers faster and more flexible patient refund options, including secure electronic delivery, while still maintaining the option to receive a paper check.

How the Refund Process Works

If a refund is issued on your account:

  1. You will receive an email from RWJBarnabas Health notifying you that a refund is available.

  2. The email is securely delivered through our payment partner, Commerce Bank, (donotreply@CommerceBank.com) and includes a link to the RWJBarnabas Health Refund Portal.

  3. You will be asked to confirm your identity for security purposes.
  4. You may choose how you would like to receive your refund:
    • Deposit to debit card
    • Direct deposit
    • Paper check

After you choose a payment option, you will be asked to provide your account information. For example, if you choose Direct deposit, you will be asked to enter your bank account information.

  1. Once you authorize your payment, you will receive a confirmation email.

If no action is taken within five calendar days, you will receive a reminder email. If no action is taken, a paper check will be mailed automatically to your address on file with RWJBarnabas Health.

Does this refund process apply to all RWJBarnabas Health refunds?

This refund process currently applies to patient refunds issued through RWJBarnabas Health’s Epic billing system. This process does not include insurance refunds.

How will I be notified about my refund?

If a refund is issued, you will receive an email from RWJBarnabas Health notifying you that a refund is available. The email is securely delivered through a payment partner and includes a link to the RWJBarnabas Health Refund Portal.

Is the refund portal secure?

Yes. The RWJBarnabas Health Refund Portal includes privacy and security safeguards to help protect your personal information.

What do I need to do to receive my refund?

To receive your refund electronically, you will need to access the RWJBarnabas Health Refund Portal, verify your information for security purposes, and select how you would like to receive your refund. If you do not make a selection within seven calendar days, your refund will be issued as a paper check and mailed to your address on file with RWJBarnabas Health.

What refund options are available, and how long do they take?

You may choose one of the following refund options:

  • Deposit to debit card: may be received as fast as 30 minutes
  • Direct deposit: typically, 2–4 business days
  • Paper check: up to 10–15 days

Timing may vary based on weekends and federal holidays.

Why is Commerce Bank listed on my refund?

Commerce Bank is RWJBarnabas Health’s partner for processing patient refunds. A refund issued through Commerce Bank is legitimate and related to your RWJBarnabas Health account.
