New Jersey Center for Asian Health

Chinese Health Initiative

Communication is a key part of healthcare, and speaking with a doctor who is unfamiliar with your native language can often hinder your ability to work collaboratively. Our Asian Health Center has developed the Chinese Initiative in order to better meet the medical needs of the growing Asian population in New Jersey. We have staffed our hospitals with Mandarin speaking Patient Navigators and doctors experienced in treating conditions that are prevalent in Asian-American communities.

Hepatitis Screenings

Hepatitis is one of the most prevalent health risks faced by Asian Americans. One in ten Asians has chronic Hepatitis B, but only one in three are aware of their infection. More than half of Asians diagnosed with Hepatitis B acquired it from their mothers during birth. The condition usually lasts for the individual’s entire life and without proper management, it can result in serious health risks such as cirrhosis and cancer.

Most people with hepatitis will not experience any symptoms, but that does mean the condition is harmless. Far too many patients do not realize they have hepatitis until it has resulted in long-term health problems. We offer hepatitis screenings so that you can know for sure whether or not this condition will harm you or a loved one later on and begin appropriate treatment if necessary.
