Eligibility Criteria for Additional (Third) COVID-19 Vaccine Dose and Booster Shot

Can I Get a Third COVID-19 Vaccine Dose?

If you are over 18 years of age and meet the following criteria, you qualify for an additional (third) COVID-19 vaccine dose:

  • You are moderately or severely immunocompromised (see criteria)
  • You have completed the two-dose series of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (either Pfizer or Moderna NOT Johnson & Johnson/Janssen)
  • You have received the second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at least 28 days ago
  • You have NOT received COVID-19 monoclonal antibody therapy (Bamlanivimab, Casirivimab-Imdevimab or Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab) or passive antibody treatment (convalescent plasma) in the last 90 days
  • You have NOT received a COVID-19 vaccine as part of a clinical trial
  • You are NOT allergic to any ingredient of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that people whose immune systems are compromised moderately to severely should receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) after the initial two doses. This third dose is recommended at least 28 days after the second dose, and is not for people who have received the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine. If you are immunocompromised, talk to your healthcare provider about your medical condition and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for you. Can I Get a Booster Dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Individuals over 18 years of age who meet the CDC criteria for high-risk individuals may receive a booster shot at least six months after completion of the primary series (first and second shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines) or at least two months after the single Johnson & Johnson/Janssen shot). The Moderna COVID-19 single booster dose is half of the dose administered for a primary series dose.

The booster shot you receive does not have to be the same brand of vaccine as the one you originally received. Boosters may be mixed and matched. For example, Moderna COVID-19 vaccine recipients falling into one of the authorized categories for boosters may receive a booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after completing their primary vaccination.
