“The Cohen Cancer Center, Dr. Shah, and the entire team have been the greatest blessing of my life.”

At Newark Beth Israel: A Young Mother Finds Strength and Survivorship After Hodgkin Lymphoma Diagnosis
Just 10 months ago, Shantiah’s world turned upside down.
The 27-year-old was waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, her legs aching so badly she could barely walk. She felt like she couldn’t catch her breath. With a one-and-a-half-year-old son to care for, these sudden symptoms were terrifying.
Fortunately, she lives just blocks from Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBI). In excruciating pain, she came to the Emergency Department, where the team immediately began searching for answers. Tests revealed she had an extremely low blood count.
More tests and scans followed, and within days, she received a diagnosis no young mother expects: Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, and a mass in her chest. Despite the shock, Shantiah faced the news with courage and determination—focused on one goal: getting better to be there for her son.
She was referred to the Frederick B. Cohen, MD, Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at NBI, together with Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, where patients have access to the most advanced treatment options including clinical trials.

“From the moment she arrived, the multidisciplinary team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center mobilized to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Her case was complex, but through coordinated efforts, from rapid diagnostics to personalized chemotherapy planning, we were able to begin treatment without delay,” states Shailja Shah, MD, Hematologist/Oncologist.
Shantiah began chemotherapy at the Cohen Cancer Center every two weeks. The journey wasn’t easy—chemotherapy left her with brain fog and physical challenges. Yet with each treatment, the mass around her heart began to shrink.
“As Shantiah’s treating physician, I’ve witnessed firsthand the strength and resilience she brought to every step of her journey,” states Shah. “What stood out most throughout her care was her unwavering determination to fight for her health and her son. Our goal is always to treat not just the disease, but the whole person—and Shantiah’s trust in our team made that possible.”
On February 11, 2025, completing six full cycles of chemotherapy she took part in the tradition of ringing the bell, celebrating the end of treatment. Now four months into remission, Shantiah is running after her toddler again and quickly reclaiming her inner and outer strength. “Seeing her now, four months into remission, regaining her strength and embracing life again, is why we do this work. It’s an honor to be part of her journey,” states Shah.
Shantiah is filled with gratitude for the team that stood by her side. “The Cohen Cancer Center, Dr. Shah, and the entire team have been the greatest blessing of my life.”
She shares her story in hopes of helping others. “Don’t give up just because you have cancer, God’s not finished with you, there’s still life to live. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, speak up and seek care.”
Taking action made all the difference for her. Early action saved her life—and it could save yours too.
