Cathy G What She Learned Led to a Life-Saving Emergency Room Visit

"I am so appreciative because they saved my life.”

Community member Cathy Gresko thought she might be having a stroke based on education she received at a free event presented by RWJUH Hamilton’s Better Health Program, a complimentary membership program for anyone 65+ years old. Remembering the warning signs—such as sudden numbness or weakness in the arms--she immediately went to the emergency department at RWJUH Hamilton.

After undergoing tests and scans, the medical team discovered she had a brain tumor. Cathy underwent surgical resection at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, then returned home to continue cancer treatment at the Cancer Center at RWJUH Hamilton. “I wanted to stay close to home and my children,” said Cathy, “The Cancer Center at RWJUH Hamilton allowed me and my family to get through my journey together. Everyone was wonderful, from the nurses and emergency room doctors to the team at Cooperman, Dr. Yogarajah and Dr. Jan at the Cancer Center, Dr. Ali and the geriatric team, and Joyce Cantalice, the manager of the Better Health Program. I am so appreciative because they saved my life.”
