Gail Gail’s Speech Therapy Journey

Lisa made me feel at ease immediately. She tested my voice, suggested voice exercises, role modeled them, and allowed my son to take video of me mirror imaging Lisa for practice at home

Gail began working with Lisa Serviss, MA, CCC-SLP, Supervisor of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Adult Speech Therapy Department, several years ago after suffering from left vocal cord paresis due to a viral infection.

“Lisa made me feel at ease immediately. She tested my voice, suggested voice exercises, role modeled them, and allowed my son to take video of me mirror imaging Lisa for practice at home. Lisa even taught me how to breathe correctly to achieve maximum voice quality. Most importantly, Lisa was very thorough,” Gail recalls.

After Gail visited a top voice specialist in Massachusetts, Lisa reviewed the video of the examination and recommended obtaining a second opinion because Gail’s vocal cords were not clearly visible in the video.

“Had it not been for Lisa’s efforts, I would not have seen that second doctor, who recommended an injectable implant to increase my voice quality. I receive the injection yearly and follow up with Lisa for a quick checkpoint. She has been constant support during a multi-year journey to diagnose and treat my vocal cord issue. I am happy to say I am in the best condition now and continue to practice the voice exercises Lisa gave me to strengthen my voice. Most people have no idea I have a disability thanks to this comprehensive treatment plan,” says Gail.
