PGY2 Goals & Objectives
General Practice Residency in Dentistry at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
The Newark Beth Israel Medical Center PGY-2 Program provides Resident education and advanced clinical experiences in all areas of Dentistry (especially of a complex and difficult nature), in treating hospital “in-patients” (consultation and treatment for medically complex patients) and in Operating Room Dentistry (including head and neck surgery). PGY-2 Residents participate in daily lectures. Experiences will allow the resident upon graduation to provide advanced dental services, including specialty care, in a progressive dental practice of their choice or seamlessly continue their education in a specialty program.
We developed this Program to train a “Super GP”. Graduates will be able to join a progressive dental practice and among other procedures complete the office’s molar RCT efficiently and optimally as well as provide advanced surgical procedures that an office might have previously referred.
All treatment in the NBIMC Dental Center is provided by Dental Residents under the supervision of our 60 Attending Staff members who are dedicated to Resident education and represent all dental specialties. Different from “private practice” the PGY-2 position is designed for PGY-1 GPR or AEGD graduates looking to improve their clinical skills in an educational setting that encourages conceptual understanding of dentistry. This opportunity, for a candidate that comes highly recommended from their current Program Director, can potentially change a professional life.
The “story” of our previous PGY-2 Residents is just one indication of how the added year benefitted them individually and helped them on their journey of successfully achieving their professional goals. Each became a leader by example to the PGY-1 residents.
We have had 11 PGY-2 Residents who have completed our program. We accept one PGY-2 resident each year.
Of the graduates:
- 2 have gone on to specialize in OMFS
- 1 was accepted and became a Pediatric Dentist
- 2 provide primarily Oral Surgery services to a large group Practice
- 1 joined a “high end” Manhattan Dental Practice immediately upon graduation
- 1 was accepted/graduated from a post grad Prostho Program with a surgical implant component
- 1 entered their parent’s practice and is now able to provide General Dentistry including advanced Oral Surgery procedures
- 1 joined and later became a partner in a group practice
- 2 continue to be an associate in a Dental Practice
Mentored PGY-2 cases have recently included (but are not limited to):
Implants
- Four guided implants placed in the maxilla. Case placed in a long-term PMMA provisional that is tooth and implant supported to finalize esthetics and function. The plan is/was to allow additional implants to integrate before transitioning to an all on 6 implant restoration
- A similar case using another implant brand. Fixture level impressions recently taken. The patient was/is in a long-term PMMA provisional restoration to work out esthetics and functionality.
- A CBCT was used along with case/surgery planning software and was/is available for cases. These particular cases, as do others involved the restorative, prosthodontic and periodontal faculty. Both of these cases required bone grafting with membrane placement.
- Other cases include: Implant placements in the anterior zone and implants with custom tissue shaping.
Crown/Bridge
- Full arch and/or large crown and bridge cases under supervision of restorative faculty.
- Cases can include refinement of prep design and dealing with complications of metal framework fit and occlusal issues.
- “inheriting” the larger prosthetic cases from the graduating PGY-1 class at the beginning of the residency year.
Oral Surgery
- A motivated PGY-2 can increase their complex Oral Surgery cases based on personal choice
- Cases include multiple impacted wisdom teeth (horizontal, vertical, mesial and distal)
- Experiences also include incisional and excisional biopsy samples.
Treatment Planning
- Ability to receive treatment-planning input from a large attending staff for “complex” multidiscipline cases.
- The ability to treatment plan cases utilizing specialists in all areas of dentistry including TMD, occlusion and OFP.
- Treatment planning/treating medically complex patients
Endodontics
- Cases utilizing rotary endodontics; warm vertical obturation.
- Tremendous amount of experience with molar endo
- Retreatment of failing endodontic cases
Periodontics
- Phase II treatment including periodontal surgery.
This CODA accredited program is available to candidates who will have graduated from an accredited (PGY-1) GPR or AEGD Program.
PGY-2 Goals/Objectives
The goals and objectives of student/resident training for the second year of training must be at a higher level than those of the first year of the program. It is the intention that the resident build upon their PGY-1 experience to provide care in more complex cases
Expectations/Goals: Demonstrating Higher Level Learner in All Areas
- Leading through example for the PGY-1 Residents
-
As a “higher lever practitioner” the PGY-2 should
- Be a source of knowledge for the PGY-1 Resident
- Complete cases that are beyond the level of a PGY-1 Resident
- Over the course of the year demonstrate an increased didactic knowledge and understanding
- Over the course of the year demonstrate increased clinical knowledge and understanding
