Summary:

This workshop will allow Athletic Trainers to become better familiar with current trends & concepts relating to the LGBTQ+ community. Athletic Trainers will explore terminology, examine their own biases, & learn ways to make their practice (& facility) more inclusive of the LGBTQ+ population.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define & differentiate LGBTQ+ terminology
  2. Participants will be able to identify effective methods for supporting the LGBTQ+ community
  3. Participants will be able to create a Safe Space environment within their own facility
  4. Participants will be able to analyze current practices, & update to be inclusive of the LGBTQ+ population

Biography:

Patty Middlemiss currently serves as the Athletic Trainer at West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North. Patty graduated from East Stroudsburg University in 1999 with a BS in Physical Education (concentration in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine). In 2000, she was awarded an M.Ed. in Health Education from Widener University. In January 2001, she began working in the clinical outreach setting with HealthSouth Rehabilitation in Seattle, WA. From 2002-2008, Patty served as Assistant Athletic Trainer, & eventually Head Athletic Trainer at Gwynedd-Mercy University (Lower Gwynedd, PA). In August 2008, she began working at West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North as the school’s Athletic Trainer, as well as teaching the Fundamentals of Sports Medicine course. Patty is also a wife & mother of two active boys.
