In April, The New Jersey Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Saint Barnabas welcomes Kara Richardson Whitely, author of Gorge: My Journey Up Kilimanjaro at 300 Pounds, to their monthly support group. Kara, determined to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, struggled with each step -- the grueling conditions, the 300-pound weight of her own body, and her food addiction, which came from a lifetime of reckoning with feelings of failure and shame. Deep in her personal gorge, Kara realized the only way out was up.

At the April Support Group, Kara will share her inspiring story of living as a fat woman in America, where fat prejudice is rampant despite our nation's pandemic of obesity. Her weight served as a constant source of conflict and shame, as the people from every corner of her life, from co-workers to neighbors, would judge her for the size of her body. When it became just too much to tolerate, Kara turned to therapy and weight-loss surgery, a choice that transformed her body-and her life. She offers a revealing comparison of life before and after radical weight loss.

While this program is free, pre-registration is required online or by calling Jen Stein at 973-322-9845.

Did you know that patients who attend post-surgery weight loss groups lose up to 10% more weight than those who do not attend groups?

At RWJBarnabas Health, we offer monthly specialized support groups for patients who have had bariatric surgery. We strive to provide valuable information and help you deal with unexpected challenges. Each support group offers additional educational and networking opportunities for participants. We also welcome patients who are preparing for surgery.

To assure that sessions offer the highest value to patients, sessions address a broad spectrum of issues that help meet the challenges of long-term lifestyle changes. We strive to recognize the needs of our patients at all levels. The groups are led by professionals, a licensed psychologist and dietitian, who are especially experienced with the challenges of obesity. Past topics have included: relaxation tips/techniques, healthy cooking and meal planning, stress management, coping skills, body image changes, protein supplement taste testing and many more. We’ve also had guest speakers such as plastic surgeons, metabolic physicians and motivational speakers.
