    Smruti R. Mohanty MD, MS, is a Gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist who serves as a director, division of gastroenterology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, NJ. Dr. Mohanty further specializes in liver diseases and liver transplant. He has extensive experience in clinical care, evaluation and management of adults with gastrointestinal and liver diseases, and a clinical focus in treating acute and chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis of the liver. Dr. Mohanty also evaluates patients for liver transplantation and provides clinical care for post-liver transplant patients.

    Dr. Mohanty earned his medical degree from Utkal University in India and served his internal medicine residency at Texas A&M Health Science Center, Baylor Scott & White, Temple, TX. He completed his fellowship training in gastroenterology at the university of California San Diego Health and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has also completed his master degree in Community health from Minnesota State University, MN.

    Dr. Mohanty’s research expertise are in acute and chronic liver disease and patients with cirrhosis of liver including racial and ethnic differences in clinical outcomes and clinical care in patients with liver diseases & liver transplantation. He has conducted extensive research on health care disparities and long-term outcome patients with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and Covid-19. He has more than 150 publications including peer review journal, abstracts, review articles and book chapters.

    Prior to joining Newark Beth Israel, Dr. Mohanty served as the Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and hepatobiliary disease and Director, Center for Liver disease at New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York, where he worked with the team to establish in-patient hepatology consult service and hepatology (liver) out-patient ambulatory clinic. He also played a pivotal role for the nationally ranked liver disease and Liver Transplant program at University of Chicago Medicine from 2001-2011.

    Dr. Mohanty is a fellow of the American College of Physician, a member American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, and a member of the American Gastroenterology Association. He has received awards, grants and accolades for his work in Liver disease and liver transplant.
