Pediatric Kidney Transplant Surgery

Successful pediatric kidney transplant surgeries require the expertise and dedication of a team of transplant professionals, as well as the commitment of the patient and his/her family.

At the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Johnson University Hospital, the only dedicated pediatric hospital in the state of New Jersey performing pediatric kidney transplant surgeries, our team includes transplant surgeons and pediatric nephrologists with many years of experience in the care of pediatric kidney transplant patients. Because it is a research center and teaching hospital, RWJUH also participates in clinical studies to continuously improve the quality of care for our patients.

Early Diagnosis

With early diagnosis and state of the art care, kidney failure can be prevented. If not, renal replacement therapy can return the child to good health and a happy, productive life.

Our Pediatric Kidney Transplant Team

BMSCH partners with a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising pediatric transplant nephrologists, pediatric urologists, pediatric anesthesiologist, child psychologists, social workers, nurse coordinators and many others to provide comprehensive care to children with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.

Our Team

Pediatric renal transplantation is a highly specialized field dealing with complex patients, some with multiple medical issues. The Pediatric Transplant Surgery Division at BMSCH brings extensive expertise in the arena of Pediatric Renal Transplantation with over 50 years of combined experience in pediatric transplantation. All of our surgeons completed a United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) approved fellowship in the care of pediatric patients undergoing renal transplantation, including pre- and post-transplant care. We specialize in the transplantation of extremely small infants, (~ 10 kg or more) and are well-versed in dealing with complex urologic reconstructions, congenital anomalies as well as the intricacies of dialysis access in this complex population.

A very important part of our team is a dedicated nursing staff. With many years of expertise, our nurses understand the difficulty that chronic illness presents to the patients and their families. They play a critical role in providing education, guidance and support of patients and families through the entire process. Good nutrition is important to optimal health. Our pediatric nutritionists, who have expertise in chronic kidney disease, are another important part of our team. Our dedicated and enthusiastic child life specialists work with our patients in the hospital. Pediatric urology, radiology, anesthesiologist and physicians in all other pediatric specialties are also available for consultation and are integrated into the patient’s care as needed.

Pediatric Urology

Pediatric urology is a critical component of our pediatric transplant team. We are fortunate to be able to offer our kidney transplant patients the highest level of expertise to care for even the most complex urological problems. For the third year in a row, the pediatric urology program at BSMCH was ranked as a top program nationally by US News and World Report and is the only program in New Jersey to be ranked. The pediatric urology program is proficient in all aspects of bladder and urinary tract reconstruction, including bladder augmentation with intestinal segments and construction of continent catheterizable urinary stomas. These procedures not only provide a safe bladder for transplant, but dramatically improve our patient’s quality of life. Our Pediatric Continence Center is N.J.’s only videourodynamic for children and our pediatric urodynamic nurse has experience performing over 1,000 studies. Accurate videourodynamics are an important part of the pre-transplant evaluation for children with neurogenic bladder problems such as spina bifida and posterior urethral valves to make sure the bladder will not harm the transplanted kidney. Our urology team also offers routine and complex endoscopic procedures including infant cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, and deflux injection for post-transplant infectious reflux. Our nationally-ranked urology group brings a level of capability to the kidney transplant program that is unsurpassed in our region, contributing to the outstanding care of the transplant recipient.
