NEWARK, N.J. (September 10, 2026) — Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Division of Cardiology a part of the RWJBarnabas Health Heart & Vascular Service Line, opened a new state-of-the-art hybrid cardiac catheterization lab.
The new hybrid cardiac catheterization lab is a 730-square-foot suite equipped with advanced imaging equipment to perform complex minimally invasive procedures with greater precision, such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Repair (TAVR), peripheral vascular procedures, electrophysiology procedures, and additional advanced treatments.
“This new hybrid suite combines the advanced imaging capabilities of a cardiac catheterization lab with the capacity of a modern operating room and greatly improves our ability to perform extremely complex minimally invasive cardiac and vascular procedures in one location,” said Sergio Waxman, MD, MBA, Chief of Cardiology, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

In 2025, Newark Beth Israel performed more than 370 complex cardiac procedures in its modern operating rooms and 3,900 procedures in their cardiac catheterization lab.
The new hybrid cardiac catheterization lab is part of the Newark Strong Project. This $200 million facility expansion includes a 17,500-square-foot, glass-enclosed lobby; a state-of-the-art geriatric unit; redesigned and expanded adult and pediatric emergency departments; a new cardiothoracic intensive care unit; and a renovated cardiac catheterization lab.
In 2025, Newark Beth Israel opened a new cardiac catheterization lab recovery area with 16 state-of-the-art recovery bays, a dedicated pediatric bay and a radial lounge for patients recovering from radial artery procedures. The expanded recovery area supports more than 4,000 cardiac procedures annually.
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s cardiovascular team performs a broad range of minimally invasive procedures, including diagnostic cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), complex and high-risk coronary angioplasty, procedures to treat heart rhythm disorders, device implantation, left atrial appendage closure and transcatheter heart valve procedures, including transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacement. The medical center also provides advanced structural heart, vascular and congenital cardiac interventions.
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s cardiovascular program has earned national recognition for its clinical expertise and commitment to quality. It holds The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific certification for Congestive Heart Failure, Stroke and Ventricular Assist Device care.
