Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Celebrates Research Day

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) celebrated Research Day, bringing together clinicians, researchers, and staff from across the organization to highlight the impactful work driving innovation and enhancing patient care.

Hosted by the Clinical Research Office, this event served as a platform to showcase the depth of research taking place at CBMC. More than 110 attendees participated, with over 25 research posters presented, representing departments spanning clinical, administrative, and specialty service lines.

The event was designed to spotlight the critical research that often happens behind the scenes, but directly contributes to improved outcomes, innovative treatments, and enhanced patient experiences. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the event showed how collaboration fuels innovation and strengthens the overall standard of care.

The program included:

  • Global Innovation: High-impact clinical investigations conducted in collaboration with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnological enterprises, focused on the development and validation of novel therapeutic agents and advanced medical devices.
  • Scholarly Achievement: Rigorous, investigator-initiated inquiries that contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and are frequently published in high-impact, prestigious medical journals.
  • Clinical Advancement: Research by various disciplines like pharmacy, nursing, and resident staff designed to address critical clinical inquiries and optimize institutional processes. These initiatives focus on robust quality improvement frameworks and the implementation of evidence-based practices to ensure superior patient outcomes and safety.

“Research Day reflects CBMC’s commitment to clinical research,” shares pediatric critical care physician, Shira Gertz, MD, FAAP, FCCM, Medical Director of Non-Oncology Research at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Rutgers NJMS Professor, and member of the RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group. “With strong support from leadership and continued engagement across departments, we are building on this momentum, expanding opportunities for innovation, and ensuring research remains a cornerstone of our mission to deliver exceptional care.”

The CMBC Research Day also included keynote presentation by transplant nephrologist, Anup M. Patel, MD, Director of Transplant Research for the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, who delivered an engaging overview of CBMC’s nationally ranked kidney transplant research program.

During his presentation Dr. Patel emphasized how research plays a role in expanding access to innovative therapies improving patient outcomes, and positioning CBMC in clinical trials. He also explained the ongoing initiatives aimed at improving quality of life, increasing transplant access, and advancing long-term outcomes for patients.

In addition, the day featured a Lunch & Learn session led by the CBMC Institutional Review Board (IRB), providing education on ethical research practices and reinforcing the organizations commitment to responsible, high-quality research.

“The purpose of CBMC Research Day is to showcase and celebrate the exceptional research, quality improvement, and academic initiatives that underpin our commitment to clinical excellence and high-quality patient care,” shares Joshua Bishop-Mbachu, MBS, ACRP-CP, Research Manager, Clinical Research Office at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.

All around, the event created meaningful opportunities for collaboration across departments. From high-impact clinical trials to investigator-initiated studies and interdisciplinary projects led by nursing, pharmacy, and resident teams, the event demonstrated how research continues to shape the future at CBMC.
