Healthgrades Excellence Awards for OBGYN and Labor and Delivery

Among the Top 10 Percent of Hospitals in the Nation Evaluated by Healthgrades

Belleville, NJ, August 2022—Clara Maass Medical Center, part of the RWJBarnabas Health system, has received the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award and the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award from Healthgrades for the seventh year in a row (2016-2022). The 5-Star rating associated with each Award indicates that Clara Maass’ excellent clinical outcomes for natural childbirth, C-section deliveries, and gynecologic procedures are among the top 10 percent of U.S. hospitals that were evaluated by Healthgrades.

The results were based on Healthgrades’ analysis of patient data from 16 states from 2018 through 2020. On average, patients treated in a hospital that received the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award had a 41.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they had been treated in hospitals that did not receive this Award, according to Healthgrades.

Also, significant, according to Healthgrades, is that patients treated in a hospital that received the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award had a 35 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they had been treated in hospitals that did not receive this award.

“It is an honor for Clara Maass to be recognized for providing such excellent care to our patients for the seventh year in a row,” said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Clara Maass Medical Center. “Our Awards and 5-Star ratings for excellence reflect our deep commitment to providing patients with the safest, most compassionate and highest quality care.”

In arriving at the 5-Star rating for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Healthgrades evaluated hospital performance in four areas: C-section Delivery, Gynecologic Procedures (other than hysterectomies), Hysterectomy, and Vaginal Delivery. For the Labor and Delivery 5-Star rating, Healthgrades based its results on complication outcomes for live-born single births delivered via vaginal delivery and live-born and twin births delivered via C-section.

“It is critical for patients to select care based on three key pieces of information—hospital quality, facility and care team experience with your condition/procedure, and compatibility, and this 5-Star distinction is another benchmark to help make those decisions easier,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and head of Data Science, Healthgrades.
