“Where you have your surgery is so important. I needed a little more help and they were there for me.”
George Murrell was very active, loved to walk, exercise, ride his stationary bike, but hip pain restricted his movement. He was hunched over, in constant pain.
“I was always a walker and that was gone from me. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t get dressed. I needed help. Now I’m up doing exercise 4:30 in the morning. It’s a pleasure to do those things again.”
In December 2016, he had his left hip replaced at the Joint Replacement Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway .
“I wish I had done it sooner. Now I can go where I want to go and do what I want to do. I feel great. Recently I was walking with my wife and she told me to slow down. I didn’t know I was walking so fast. It’s a new beginning. I’m pain free and going back to things I was normally doing – walking, riding the stationary bike.”

Prior to surgery…
I couldn’t live with the pain. I was taking a lot of pain medication. I wouldn’t even go to church with my wife. I couldn’t walk or stand up or sit down. Now I am going to go back to church and maybe I’ll even start singing again.”
Before the surgery, I was in so much pain, but I was really afraid: afraid of the operation and the recovery. I was thinking I would need to recover in a nursing home because of my blindness and the operation. I even picked out a home. They told me I didn’t need that. They had everything I needed to recover and that I could recover at home and I did. ”
