Emotionally-Related Kidney Transplant
During his senior year of high school, Anthony’s life was changed when he was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and had to begin dialysis. As an athlete and one of the top Judo players in his school, Anthony never expected something like this to happen to him. As his health grew worse, he lost weight and found it hard to focus on his school work.
“When my brother Wilkis agreed to donate, I was glad that he'd end my nightmare,” says Anthony.
For Wilkis, there was never any question whether he would donate. “My brother is very important to me and I love him dearly. I wanted to save his life,” he explains.
“The Living Donation staff along with the Pediatric Nephrology team was so great to me, they became a family for me. They gave me so much support and helped me to keep on going,” adds Anthony. Both brothers agree that staff from 5700 were very helpful, showed concern and explained in detail the process for a healthy and fast recovery.
“After receiving my transplant, I felt amazing. I have not only been reborn, but I have attained a new lease on life,” shares Anthony. He has been able to practice Judo again and is preparing to get his black belt.
