The First Annual Acute and Critical Care Symposium

Management of the Acute and Critically Ill

Symposium Overview

Course Description
This Acute & Critical Care Symposium is designed to provide allied health care professionals and physicians an overview of common topics and procedures seen in the acute and critical care setting. There will be pre-work to develop systematic approaches to diagnostic interpretation, case scenarios to emphasize key learning concepts, as well as hands-on and simulation stations to develop both technical and critical thinking skills with the support of experts across the RWJBarnabas Healthcare (RWJBH) System.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review the latest guidelines to increase knowledge base and gain competence with topics relevant in the acute and critical care settings: sepsis, common hospital-associated infections, and anti microbial management; as well as the diagnosis and management of shock, respiratory failure, and oncologic emergencies.
  • Implement best practice guidelines to demonstrate technical skills and hands-on procedures such as CVC and arterial catheter placement, chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, paracentesis, intubation, splinting, lumbar puncture (LP), and intraosseous (IO) insertion.
  • Develop a systematic approach while gaining competence to diagnostic interpretation: ECG, CXR, CT head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis.
  • Develop skills to diagnose and manage the acute and critically ill patient via simulation modalities.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, and physicians.
