Thomas L. Jang, MD

Since completing my urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2008, I have devoted most of my career to caring for patients at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, affiliated with RWJ University Hospital. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers involving the urinary and genital tract, with particular expertise in high-risk cancers requiring complex treatment.

Over the past several years, I have become one of the highest-volume kidney and testicular cancer surgeons in New Jersey. My expertise includes advanced kidney cancer surgery, complex partial nephrectomies that preserve kidney function, and nerve-sparing retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) to maintain fertility in men with testicular cancer. I also have extensive experience managing prostate and bladder cancers. To date, I have completed more than 300 kidney cancer surgeries, 300 radical prostatectomies, 100 RPLNDs, and nearly 100 radical cystectomies with urinary tract reconstruction.

My research, supported by the New Jersey Health Foundation, focuses on assessing long-term survival and functional outcomes of patients with kidney and prostate cancers. I have authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and have been honored with numerous awards for research, teaching, and patient care. From 2008 to 2014, I directed the Programs in Kidney and Testicular Cancers at Rutgers Cancer Institute, and I currently oversee the Division of Urology’s Program in Surgical Outcomes, Quality Care, and Patient Safety.

Philosophy of Care:

I strive to deliver the highest quality, evidence-based, and individualized care. For some patients this means surgery, while for others it may be active monitoring. I believe in providing a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach that balances cancer control with quality of life. My goal is to help patients and their families navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis with clarity, compassion, and trust, while advancing the field through research and education.

Clinical Interests:

Kidney cancer (radical and partial nephrectomy, cytoreductive nephrectomy); testicular cancer (nerve-sparing retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, orchiectomy); prostate cancer (radical prostatectomy, salvage prostatectomy); bladder cancer (radical cystectomy with urinary reconstruction); and other urologic malignancies of the urinary and genital tract.
