Susan C. Shin, MD
- Neurology
Dr. Shin serves as Chief of the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health. She has trained numerous neuromuscular specialists who now hold leadership positions, including division directorships and fellowship program directorships at academic medical centers nationally.
Her clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of neuromuscular disorders, including myasthenia gravis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophies, hereditary neuropathies, metabolic myopathies, channelopathies, and inflammatory myopathies, among many others. She participates in a multidisciplinary ALS clinic and an MDA Care Center, providing comprehensive team-based care for patients with motor neuron disease and muscular dystrophy.
Her diagnostic approach integrates electrodiagnostic testing and neuromuscular ultrasound with detailed clinical assessment. Dr. Shin emphasizes shared decision-making and patient engagement to optimize clinical outcomes and quality of life.
Dr. Shin has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks and is an active clinical trials investigator, including participation in the Healey Platform Trial for ALS. Her research interests include the application of neuromuscular ultrasound to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in neuromuscular medicine. Her contributions to medical education have been recognized with the A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology and the Tauba Pasik, MD and Pedro Pasik, MD Award for Teaching Excellence in Neuroscience. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
Dr. Shin was drawn to neuromuscular medicine by the diagnostic complexity of the field. She finds fulfillment in utilizing advanced tools such as electromyography and neuromuscular ultrasound to reach precise diagnoses, an essential first step in developing an effective treatment plan for every patient.
