P. Ashley Wackym, MD

Dr. P. Ashley Wackym is a nationally recognized surgical otologist-neurotologist and skull base surgeon. He serves as Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, senior member of the Rutgers Brain Health Institute, and Chancellor Scholar of Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences.
Over his career, Dr. Wackym has combined clinical excellence, academic leadership, and research innovation. He previously led the Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin for more than a decade, and also served as Vice President of Research for Legacy Health in Oregon and Washington, directing the Legacy Research Institute.
His clinical expertise centers on cochlear implantation, skull base surgery, and the management of complex hearing and balance disorders. He is particularly well known for his surgical treatment of superior semicircular canal dehiscence and other third window syndrome disorders.
Dr. Wackym has been recognized with 18 national and international awards, including the Nicholas Torok Vestibular Award of the American Neurotology Society, the Edmund Prince Fowler Award, and the Distinguished Service Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.
His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than two decades, with projects spanning gene discovery in the inner ear, surgical outcomes in third window syndrome and cochlear implantation, Gamma Knife surgery, balance disorders, and the development of new biomedical engineering technologies.

Otology, neurotology, lateral skull base surgery, cochlear and auditory brainstem implantation, implantable hearing devices, congenital and acquired hearing and balance disorders, advanced ear surgery, aural atresia, cholesteatoma, facial nerve disorders, genetic hearing loss and inner ear malformations, and skull base tumors such as acoustic neuroma, NF2, and schwannomas. schwannoma).
