Najam Wasty, MD Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Training Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center has been practicing invasive/interventional cardiology for over 35 years. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers-NJ Medical School and is a pioneer in the field of complex coronary stenting with and without the use of Impella. Dr. Wasty successfully performed several of the first left main coronary artery stent procedures in the state of New Jersey for patients who had been turned down for open heart surgery due to prohibitive surgical risk. Dr. Wasty has done original work on alternate access for Impella support for such procedures when the conventional leg approach is not a feasible option. He led the team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center that was the first on the Eastern seaboard to perform and report an Impella insertion from the upper arm (Axillary Artery approach) in 2014. Dr. Wasty is triple board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Society of Coronary Angiography and Interventions (SCAI).
Clinical interests:
Complex coronary stenting with Impella support especially in patients who have been turned down for open heart surgery; carotid, subclavian and renal artery stenting; stenting and balloon angioplasty for severe peripheral artery disease causing disabling leg pain and threatened limb loss. He also performs minimally invasive heart procedures.
