  • Dr. Igor Gosev, Chief, Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) at Newark Beth Israel (NBI), is a cardiac surgeon specializing in advanced heart failure, MCS, and heart transplant at the region’s fastest-growing program.
Nationally recognized for minimally invasive heart failure surgery, Gosev has helped pioneer off-pump, bilateral thoracotomy left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, an approach designed to reduce surgical trauma and associated with lower bleeding risk, reduced vasoplegia, and improved right ventricular outcomes.

He's led NBI to major multi-institutional collaborations, including ANSWER-HF and FUTURE-HF, and the national INNOVATE and TEAM-HF trials, to help advance next-generation therapies in heart failure and MCS. NBI’s donor pool has also expanded to include donation-after-circulatory-death (DCD) hearts.

Formerly he was on the University of Rochester Medical Center faculty and developed one of the U.S.’ 1st Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways for LVAD patients, helping improve extubation times, reduce opioid use, and enhance postoperative recovery. He now leads efforts to standardize ERAS principles for heart failure surgery on a broader scale, with emphasis on collaboration, data-driven benchmarking, and multidisciplinary networking to improve outcomes.
