Andrew N. De la Torre, MD,FACS
- Surgery-Hepatobiliary | Surgery-Minimally Invasive
Dr. Andrew de la Torre is a highly experienced liver, pancreas and bile duct surgeon, trained in liver transplant with more than 25 years of expertise in surgery of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts, as well as management of cirrhosis, portal hypertension and liver cancer. He was the first surgeon in New Jersey to perform a major liver resection laparoscopically and has been performing complex laparoscopic liver surgery since 2007. He has run numerous clinical trials in liver cancer care.
Dr. de la Torre specializes in tissue-sparing laparoscopic liver surgery for patients with well compensated cirrhosis, offering the possibility of avoiding liver transplant for tumors once deemed inoperable. Unlike many surgeons who begin laparoscopically and later convert to open surgery, 95% of his patients complete surgery laparoscopically without compromising safety or quality.
In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. de la Torre is committed to improving population health and cancer prevention in New Jersey’s underserved communities. He has led numerous grant-funded projects focused on early diagnosis of liver cancer, including the use of electronic health record algorithms to identify high-risk patients and place them into liver cancer surveillance registries. These type of efforts have been associated with longer survival and reduced costs for patients.
Dr. de la Torre also serves as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
