Emergency Medicine Physician - Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson, New Brunswick

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School a in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Emergency Medicine physician to join our faculty as a Nocturnist. The Emergency Department manages more than 80,000 patient visits annually and serves as a regional referral center for trauma, critical care, stroke, cardiac emergencies, and complex tertiary care.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality emergency care during overnight shifts while contributing to the department's mission of excellence in patient care, education, and academic development. Faculty members work collaboratively with emergency medicine residents, medical students, advanced practice providers (APPs), nursing staff, and multidisciplinary consultants in a fast-paced academic environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Provide comprehensive emergency medical care during designated overnight shifts.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting with a broad spectrum of acute illnesses and injuries.
  • Manage critically ill and injured patients in collaboration with trauma, surgical, medical, and specialty teams.
  • Participate in departmental quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.

Education and Supervision

  • Supervise and provide clinical oversight for Emergency Medicine residents, off-service residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that promotes clinical excellence and professional development.
  • Deliver bedside teaching and procedural instruction during clinical shifts.
  • Participate in resident and student evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Contribute to the department's educational mission through lectures, conferences, simulation activities, and other didactic teaching opportunities as appropriate.

Academic and Departmental Contributions

  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, research, educational innovation, or administrative projects consistent with faculty interests and departmental needs.
  • Support ongoing accreditation, performance improvement, and patient safety efforts.

Qualifications

MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Emergency Medicine.
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of New Jersey.
  • DEA registration and appropriate hospital credentialing.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in academic emergency medicine.
  • Demonstrated commitment to resident and medical student education.
  • Interest in quality improvement, research, simulation, ultrasound, administration, or other academic pursuits.

Compensation

The anticipated salary range for this position if hired to work is $300,000 to $315,000 per year. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate’s educational background, skills, and professional experience.
