Recognition Reflects Sustained Commitment to Excellence in Nursing Practice and Patient Care

Jersey City Medical Center nurses, staff and leadership celebrate the hospital’s fifth consecutive Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), recognizing its longstanding commitment to nursing excellence and high-quality patient care.
Jersey City, NJ, October 29– Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has earned its fifth consecutive Magnet® designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), reaffirming its longstanding commitment to exceptional nursing practice and high-quality patient care. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence and is considered the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.
Notably, the designation included eight exemplars, surpassing national benchmarks. These included high Bachelor of Science in Nursing rate reduction in infection rates, advancing safety of staff, delivering culturally sensitive care and achievements in patient safety.
“This fifth-consecutive magnet designation is the result of years of nonstop commitment by our nurses to raise the bar for their patients and each other,” said Mark E. Manigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health. “It is a hallmark of maintained excellence that tells every patient that the nurse at their bedside represents the very best.”
JCMC first achieved Magnet designation in 2008 and has continued to maintain this prestigious recognition, reflecting its longstanding commitment to nursing excellence, professional development and delivering high-quality, compassionate patient care. Approximately ten percent of hospitals nationwide have achieved Magnet recognition, which is considered the gold standard of nursing excellence.
“Receiving Magnet recognition for the fifth consecutive time is an extraordinary and rare achievement earned by only 2% of U.S. hospitals that sets JCMC apart within the industry, and a reflection of the exceptional nursing care provided at JCMC,” said Jonathan P. Kyriacou, President and Chief Executive Officer of JCMC. “Our nurses are at the heart of everything we do, and their dedication to delivering high-quality, compassionate care makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and their families every day.”
“Jersey City Medical Center’s fifth consecutive Magnet designation is a remarkable achievement that speaks to the strength of its nursing team and the culture of excellence they have built over nearly two decades,” said Nancy Holecek, Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, RWJBarnabas Health. “This recognition reflects the dedication of nurses who continually advance their practice, embrace innovation and deliver exceptional, compassionate care, strengthening nursing excellence across our health system and improving outcomes for the patients and communities we serve.”Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor when the public judges health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care.
To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition. This designation is valid for four years.
“This achievement reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence demonstrated by our nurses each and every day,” said Margaret Ames, DNP, MPA, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services at JCMC “Our nursing team continues to embrace professional development, evidence-based practices and opportunities for innovation that strengthen the care we provide.”
Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
JCMC is one of six RWJBarnabas Health hospitals to hold the prestigious Magnet designation for nursing excellence, alongside Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, which was awarded elite Magnet with Distinction recognition, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.
