Sep 9, 2025 Cholesterol & Your Heart – Simple Habits to Stay Healthy

When you hear the words “cholesterol” you might think it’s all bad, but your body actually needs some of it to work properly. The problem comes when there’s too much of the “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in your blood, which can lead to heart problems.

Cardiologist, Jeffrey S. Lander, MD, FACC, board-certified cardiologist at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, co-director of sports cardiology at RWJBarnabas Health and member of RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, is here to share a few simple habits that can help keep your heart happy and healthy!

Get to Know Your Numbers
A quick blood test at your doctor’s office can tell you your LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol) and triglyceride levels. By knowing these numbers, it is the first step to taking charge of your heart health.

Eat Smart (Without Giving Up Everything You Love)
Foods high in fiber, like oatmeal, beans, berries, and leafy greens, can help lower bad cholesterol. Choose lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish, and swap butter for heart-healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and olive oil. You don’t have to give up all your favorites, just enjoy them in moderation.

Move More, Sit Less
Exercise boosts your good cholesterol and lowers the bad. Even a 30-minute walk most days can make a difference. Find something you enjoy, like dancing, swimming or biking, and make it part of your routine.

Keep Stress in Check
Stress affects more than just your mood. It can also impact your heart too. Try deep breathing, yoga, journaling, or even a relaxing hobby to help you unwind.

Skip Smoking and Watch the Drinks
If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your heart. While the occasional drink is fine for most people, too much alcohol can raise cholesterol and blood pressure.

The Bottom Line?
You don’t have to make big changes all at once. Start small, stay consistent, and your heart will thank you for years to come.
