Make Burn Prevention Part of your Spring Clean-Up!
As the weather warms up and spring-cleaning is underway, many of us find ourselves decluttering closets, reorganizing garages and preparing for fun. Abraham Houng, MD, MSE, FACS, FABA, Medical Director ofThe Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, shares the following recommendations to help you avoid burn injury and keep your home and family safe this spring season.

  1. Use Cleaning Products Safely
Use, store, and dispose of cleaning products strictly according to manufacturer directions. Never mix cleaning products, especially those containing bleach and ammonia, which can produce toxic fumes. Always work in well-ventilated areas when using cleaning products, paint, or varnish to avoid chemical exposure or flammable vapors.

  2. Handle Fuel and Batteries with Care
Whether your power tools are gas-powered or battery-operated, handle them with caution. Store gasoline in proper containers, away from heat or flame, and keep lithium batteries in a cool, dry place.

  3. Grill Safety
Before firing up the grill, inspect gas lines and propane tanks for leaks. Make sure the grill is clean, and connections are secure.

If somebody suffers a burn, cool the area immediately with tepid water for several minutes. For any burn larger than the size of a person’s full hand, seek medical attention right away.
