We are all caregivers in one way or another. For some, it is obvious: healthcare workers, teachers, parents, spouses, adult children caring for elderly relatives and/or children, or anyone who helps another person in need. About 1 in 3 adults in the United States is an informal or family caregiver.

Caregiving is rewarding; giving a sense of satisfaction and deepening relationships. However, Caregiving also comes with a healthy dose of stress!

Stress is the root of many health concerns such as headaches, digestive problems, sleeplessness, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and more. Stress can also lead to depression.

The key to relieving caregiver stress is self-care. Researchers have identified 7 basics of daily self-care that can reduce the risk of depression by 57%:

  1. Exercise
  2. Sleep (7 to 9 hours)
  3. Healthy eating habits
  4. Limit alcohol (7 to 14 oz)
  5. Don't smoke
  6. Cut back on screen time
  7. Cultivate friendships through activities

The list below provides even more tips for managing caregiver stress.

If you find that stress from caregiving is overwhelming, One Source EAP is here to help. Call 800-300-0628. All calls are answered 24/7/365 and are strictly confidential.
