Jul 27, 2023 Jersey City Medical Center Now Offers Mako Robotic Surgery for Joint Replacements

Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, recently introduced Mako Robotic technology for joint replacements of the hip and knee — introducing robotic surgery techniques into its orthopedic program capabilities and enhancing care for the community the hospital serves.

“The introduction of the Mako robotic arm is a significant milestone in our commitment to transforming orthopedic care in the region,” said Michael Prilutsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jersey City Medical Center. This is another example of how we’re healing, enhancing, and investing in Hudson County.”

The first procedures were performed by Kayal Orthopedic Center’s Robert A. Kayal, M.D., FAAOS, Victor Ortiz, M.D., and Gerald Andah, M.D., who have pioneered these cutting-edge technologies in Northern New Jersey.

“We are thrilled to join forces with Jersey City Medical Center in bringing advanced robotic surgery to the Hudson County community. Our goal is to empower patients to make informed choices about their orthopedic care, and through this partnership, we can extend our expertise to a broader population,” said Dr. Kayal, Founder, President, and CEO of Kayal Orthopaedic Center.

The Mako robotic arm gives practitioners the ability to perform a virtual knee replacement pre-surgery, allowing precise knee positioning based on cross-sectional imaging like MRI or CT scans. With the precision of Mako technology, patients may experience a longer-lasting knee implant, potentially eliminating the need for revisions. Mako robotic-assisted surgery often leads to less pain, reduced stiffness, minimized trauma, and faster recovery times.

Jersey City Medical Center already has achieved the esteemed DNV GL Healthcare certification as a Hip & Knee Replacement Program. This certification, based on rigorous standards established by DNV GL - Healthcare and aligned with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons guidelines, recognizes the Medical Center’s exceptional patient care, outcomes, and comprehensive approach to hip and knee replacement services. It validates the hospital’s excellence in every aspect of care, including diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, education, and successful patient outcomes.
