(News Brunswick, NJ) - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Center for Professional Development, Innovation & Research and RWJUH’s PROUD Gender Center of New Jersey have announced an exciting new nursing professional development program that offers specific training on providing culturally competent care for LGBTQIA+ patients.

As part of the Nursing LGBTQ Clinical Ladder track, nurses can choose from a wide range of educational opportunities such as:

  • Presenting a peer-reviewed article on disparities in the health care related to LGBTQIA+ patients;
  • Attending a PROUD Business Resource Group meeting, PROUDLY Me Transgender Education and Support Meeting or community event and writing a reflection of the experience;
  • Attending and completing a college-level class that focuses on current trends in LGBTQIA+ health care with a B or better grade;
  • Attending an Enhanced Leadership PROUD Advisory Council meeting and writing a reflection of the experience;
  • Writing a reflection essay sharing the story of an LGBTQIA+ patient to whom the nurse provided care. The essay would address how the nurse integrated nurse-sensitive indicator standards and/or ensured patient experience/satisfaction;
  • Providing an appropriate presentation to staff after meeting with LGBTQIA+ leaders to identify an approved topic.

“We’re excited to partner with our nursing team to offer this new clinical ladder track,” adds Jackie Baras, MSN, MBA, RN, RWJUH LGBTQ Program Director adds, “This module will help our nurses see firsthand the challenges that LGBTQIA+ patients face and give them the knowledge they need to ensure that our patients are receiving the individualized care they need.”
