“It’s quite an honor for our entire team to be recognized again this year” said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center. “We’ve been very intentional about our goals to ‘raise the bar’ in the overall care that we offer to our patients, and as a trusted resource in our community for health care, this year’s recognition from Healthgrades confirms that we are exceeding our patient’s expectations by offering care that our community can count on to be safe, and with improved health outcomes” Clyne said.

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for hospitals across 16 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2017 through 2019. Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes:

  • From 2017 through 2019, if all hospitals included in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, 138,318 patients with complications could potentially have been avoided*.
  • From 2017 through 2019, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award had, on average, a 41.7% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award*.
  • Additionally, from 2017 through 2019, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award had, on average, a 37% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award*.
