Dr. Stephen O'MahonyWest Orange, NJ, November, 2020 – President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health Barry H. Ostrowsky has announced the promotion of Stephen O’Mahony, M.D., F.A.C.P., to Senior Vice President, Chief Health Information Officer.

“Dr. O’Mahony provides widespread support for IT clinical efforts on a continuing basis and has long been a champion for our electronic health record and clinical systems,” said John F. Bonamo, M.D., MS, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Quality Officer, to whom Dr. O’Mahony will continue to report. “Because of his major contributions to our IT infrastructure, during the COVID-19 pandemic we had a strong backbone with which to offer telemedicine services, electronically track patients and share information safely.”

Dr. O’Mahony leads the clinical integration of IT systems and development for the largest, most comprehensive academic health care system in New Jersey, with a service area covering nine counties with five million people. He is a key advisor in creating and formulating decision support and executive business strategies for maximizing the clinical use of information technology. Dr. O’Mahony’s responsibilities include helping to further develop and implement the system’s strategic vision for information technology to achieve highest outcomes in patient safety, quality of care, operational performance, research and education across the clinical continuum. Dr. O’Mahony is a member of the Quality Executive Committee for the health system in addition to the High Reliability Organization core team.

A native of New Jersey, Dr. O’Mahony started his career at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. Throughout his career he has worked continuously to integrate best practices and patient safety into clinical care through intelligent technology, decision support and research and education. While at Norwalk, he contributed to a landmark paper establishing the value of Clinical Educator Hospitalists, and his work has been published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine and numerous other journals in the area of quality and safety. Dr. O’Mahony received the 2011 John D. Thompson Award from the Connecticut Hospital Association for Excellence in the Delivery of Healthcare through use of Data.

Achieving Meaningful Use Stage I in 2012-13 and a “Most Wired” distinction for Norwalk Hospital, Dr. O’Mahony led the hospital to become one of the first hospitals in the country to achieve Meaningful Use Stage II in 2014, and was recognized in 2012 by the American College of Physicians with the Laureate Award for a career in medical care, education, research, and service to the community. Since joining RWJBH in 2015, Dr. O’Mahony has given multiple regional and national presentations including the New Jersey Healthcare Quality Institute, HIMSS, Node Health Digital Medicine Conference, and the Scottsdale Institute.

Dr. O’Mahony graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S.E. in computer engineering from the University of Connecticut, where he was the University Scholar and Valedictorian. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and medical residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. Dr. O’Mahony is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine with the Yale University School of Medicine prior to his appointment as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
