Jun 2, 2020 Dmitry Oleynikov, MD, Has Been Named Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center

Dimitry Oleyikov MDDr. Oleynikov, a board-certified minimally invasive general and robotic surgeon, joins MMC from Virtual Incision Corp, a company pioneering first-of-its-kind miniature robots for surgical applications based in Lincoln, Nebraska. As Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer, he successfully guided the company through in-man surgical trials in preparation for a USA-based multicenter FDA Investigational Device Exemption trial. His research use of miniature robots for general surgery is internationally recognized as a technological advance in robotic surgery and has been featured in multiple journals as well as on CNN, Wired Magazine and The Economist.

He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Upon completion of his residency, he served as a Senior Fellow at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He also is the former Joseph and Richard Still Endowed Professor of Surgery, Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, School of Medicine (CAST), where he served as full-time faculty from 2001-2019. As an active researcher and Director of CAST, he received continuous external funding during his University of Nebraska tenure that totaled $60 million. He started the University of Nebraska Medical Center Minimally Invasive Surgical Fellowship program, which has been continuously accredited and funded since 2003.

Dr. Oleynikov has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and more than 250 abstract presentations, and earned 52 patents in the area of surgical robotics and surgical outcomes research.

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons has recognized him for his achievements with an award in Excellence in Leadership and he served on its Board of Directors and currently serves as Chair of their Robotics Committee. As a member of American Surgical Association, he was honored with a Brandeis Leadership Course Award. His other honors include Outstanding Teacher Award, University of Nebraska Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha, Innovation, Development and Engagement Award, University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

At Monmouth, he will lead a department that is the region’s leader in surgical services, earning a statewide reputation for excellence in the field. Throughout its history, the hospital’s highly skilled surgeons have quickly adopted the latest surgical innovations, and this pioneering spirit has set the stage for bringing the most-advanced minimally invasive procedures, including robotic surgery, to the region. He is a nationally recognized expert in gastrointestinal surgery, foregut and esophageal disease, complex abdominal wall hernia and revisional bariatric surgery. As Chair of Surgery, Dr. Oleynikov plans to expand value-based surgical care and initiate several quality-outcome projects, and is especially focused on proper, safe and responsible opening of elective surgery during the post-COVID19 time.
