Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, recently completed renovations to its Endoscopy Suite on the hospital’s third floor.

“The newly renovated Endoscopy Suite will now allow patients to receive all of their care in one convenient location, from registration and pre-procedure care through recovery and discharge,” said Tony Cava, president and chief executive officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. “Patients will have access to the latest technology in a state-of-the-art setting that ensures their privacy and comfort.”

Highlights of the renovated space include:

  • Three procedure rooms; five pre-operative patient bays; six post-operative patient bays and one private isolation room
  • New endoscopy equipment, scopes and processing units
  • A new family waiting area with a private area where doctors can meet with family members

Procedures performed in the Endoscopy Suite include colonoscopies, upper GI endoscopies to diagnose and treat problems in the esophagus, stomach and small intestine, pulmonary bronchoscopies and ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedures to diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas and liver.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset has taken precautions to ensure patients’ safety following the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone entering the hospital is screened for symptoms and has their temperature taken. They are also given a mask to wear while in the hospital. The hospital also has stringent cleaning practices and has staggered appointments and moved chairs in waiting areas to ensure appropriate social distancing.

Patients who are having procedures in the Endoscopy Suite will be required to have a COVID-19 test prior to their procedure. They may be accompanied by one visitor while in the hospital.
