Francis L. Weng, MD, MSCE, was recently appointed Chief of the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC).

He will continue to build upon the program’s rich history and national reputation for excellence in kidney and pancreas transplantation.”
Dr. Weng joined the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at SBMC in 2005 as a transplant nephrologist. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY, and fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. During his fellowship, he obtained additional training in both transplant nephrology and clinical research and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. Dr. Weng also has appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Rutgers School of Public Health. Prior to being named Chief, Dr. Weng had served as Director of Transplant Research, Program Director, and then Associate Chief of the Transplant Division.
While at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Dr. Weng has led several large transplant-related research studies, funded by the National Institutes of Health and others. He is the author of dozens of articles published in leading medical journals and speaks nationally on transplant-related topics. Dr. Weng’s research focuses upon reducing racial disparities in access to living donor transplant; increasing medication adherence in transplant recipients; improving health education regarding kidney transplantation; and enhancing utilization of deceased donor kidneys.
The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division is located at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. Since 2015, the Division has performed an average of more than 300 kidney transplants per year, making it the largest kidney transplant program in the Northeast and one of the largest kidney transplant programs in the country. Furthermore, the outcomes of these transplants meet or exceed national benchmarks.
