Lakewood- An advanced breast biopsy system at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) is providing superior imaging capability and a more comfortable diagnostic experience for patients with suspicious breast lesions.

The Jaqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center has introduced prone stereotactic breast biopsy with tomosynthesis — an advanced biopsy system that allows radiologists to use 3D imaging to locate and accurately target regions of interest for biopsy, including those that can be difficult to detect with standard 2D imaging. This new technology also makes a breast biopsy procedure more comfortable for patients because they lay in the prone, or face down position.

“MMCSC is transforming patient care through early detection and fast, accurate diagnosis, all with a more comfortable patient experience,” says Frank J. Vozos, M.D., FACS, chief executive at MMCSC.

“Early detection and a fast, accurate diagnosis is the key to overcoming breast cancer,” says Dr. Vozos, a former practicing surgeon who treated breast cancer patients for decades. “We are proud to be one of the first facilities in the region to offer our patients the most significant advances available for the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer such as this advanced breast biopsy system.”

Diane Ciricillo, director of the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center, notes that the technology offers a number of other advantages over traditional stereotactic procedures, including shorter procedure times with reduced time under compression, reduced radiation dosing and 360 degree access to the breast that avoids repositioning of patients.

“We chose to invest in this advanced technology because it is a transformative innovation in patient care that allows us to continue to assure our patients that we are providing the most comprehensive array of advanced breast cancer detection services,” she says.
